“If I have a strain, I need to take weeks off work” — Complete rest is rarely the answer. In most cases, staying active with “modified duties” or temporary workplace adjustments maintains tissue health and prevents the muscle weakness that comes with total inactivity.

The Forearm Flexor/Extensor Stretch — Extend your right arm straight out in front of you with your palm facing down. Use your left hand to gently pull your fingers down toward your body until you feel a stretch in the top of your forearm. Hold for 20 seconds. Flip your palm up and gently pull your fingers back to stretch the underside of your forearm. Repeat on both sides.
Brugger’s Postural Relief Position — Sit on the edge of your chair with your feet flat on the floor, wider than your hips. Turn your palms outward, pull your shoulders back and down, and gently tuck your chin. Take 3 deep belly breaths. This opens up the front of your body after hours of slouching over a desk or steering wheel.
Tendinous Glides — Hold your hand up straight. Gently curve your fingers into a hook fist, then a full fist, then a straight fist (fingers flat against your palm). This helps tendons glide smoothly through the wrist tunnels, reducing local inflammation from typing or gripping tools.
Shoulder Blade Squeezes — While standing or sitting upright, imagine squeezing a tennis ball between your shoulder blades. Hold for 5 seconds, then release. Repeat 10 times to rebuild the endurance of the muscles that support your mid-back during physical tasks.

Yes. Prevention relies on changing the physical load on your body before it reaches a breaking point. The most effective habit you can build is the “20-20-20 rule” for desk workers (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds) paired with moving your body. For manual workers, warming up with gentle stretches before your shift and utilising mechanical lifting aids whenever available dramatically reduces your cumulative injury risk.
