What to Expect at Your First Appointment

If you’ve never seen an osteopath before — or if it’s been a while — it’s completely natural to have questions about what will happen. This page explains exactly what to expect.

Before You Arrive

Bring: Any imaging reports (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound — even old ones). A list of current medications including supplements. Details of relevant medical history.

What to wear: Comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being treated. Shorts or loose trousers for lower back/hip/knee problems. Vest top or short sleeves for shoulder/neck/upper back problems.

Can I bring someone? Yes — you’re welcome to bring a friend, family member or chaperone. Please let me know in advance if you’d like a formal chaperone.

How long? First appointment: 45-60 minutes. Follow-up appointments: 30-45 minutes.

The Consultation

I’ll ask about your symptoms in detail — when they started, what makes them better or worse, how they’ve changed over time and how they affect your daily life. I’ll also ask about your general health, previous injuries, medications and lifestyle.

The Examination

A physical examination relevant to your symptoms, including: observation of how you move, assessment of joint movement/strength/flexibility, examination of nearby areas that may be contributing, neurological testing where relevant, specific clinical tests when indicated.

The Explanation

I’ll explain what I’ve found in plain English — what’s likely contributing, what it means (and importantly, what it doesn’t mean), whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate, what a realistic management plan looks like, and whether further investigation or referral is needed.

Treatment

Treatment often begins during the first appointment. May include joint mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, manipulation (with consent, always explained beforehand), myofascial release, muscle energy techniques, dry needling, and exercise/lifestyle advice.

After Your Appointment

Some mild stiffness or achiness in the treated area for 24-48 hours is normal — similar to how muscles feel after a workout. Stay gently active unless advised otherwise. Contact me if post-treatment soreness hasn’t settled after 48-72 hours or if symptoms significantly worsen.
